Telecoms giants threaten freedom and equality on net

“TODAY the internet is an information highway where anybody – no matter how large or small, how traditional or unconventional – has equal access. But the phone and cable monopolies want the power to choose who gets access to high-speed lanes and whose content gets seen first and fastest.”

So warned Eric Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, on the search engine’s blog last month. Despite this warning, on 9 June US politicians voted not to put into law the principle that all bits on the internet should be treated equally.
