THIS entertaining book is likely to make your head spin. It starts with Benjamin Franklin when he was US ambassador in Paris. As the author of the dubious epigram “Early to bed and early to rise…”, he was amazed that Parisians stayed in bed after the sun had risen. A century later William Willett, an Englishman, spent his fortune and his life in promoting a scheme to set the clocks back to ensure more daylight for recreation. He failed. There are plenty of hilarious anecdotes here about the chaos that followed most attempts to save daylight around the world.
