In partnership with Intrepid Travel.

Day 1: Travel to Porto

If you are part of our Spain 2026 total solar eclipse tours, or can meet us in Burgos or Vallodolid, then this morning meet your tour leader and fellow travellers in the hotel reception for a welcome meeting scheduled for 11am. Afterwards, you will board a comfortable private coach that will take you across the border into Portugal and on to the vibrant city of Porto.

If you are not able to meet our group in Burgos or Vallodolid, then make your own way to Porto and meet the group there.

Upon arrival, check in to your centrally located hotel and have some time to settle in.

Porto is one of Europe’s oldest and most picturesque cities, where baroque churches, riverfront cafés, and tile-clad facades create a stunning introduction to Portugal. In the evening, head out together to enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant – a perfect opportunity to experience northern Portuguese hospitality and get your first taste of Porto’s rich and flavourful food scene.

Day 2: Explore Porto

Today, uncover the soul of Porto on a guided walking tour with a local expert. Wander through medieval streets, discover hidden alleys and marvel at the ornate interiors of churches and historical buildings.

The afternoon is at leisure. Visit Livraria Lello, one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores, or cross the river to Vila Nova de Gaia for a glass of port and a golden sunset over the Douro.

Day 3: Explore the Douro valley

This morning, leave the vibrant streets of Porto behind and drive by coach deep into the scenic heart of northern Portugal. Your journey winds through rolling hills and terraced vineyards until you reach the Douro valley, a region celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and world-renowned wine culture.

Along the way, you’ll stop in the charming riverside town of Pinhão, where traditional whitewashed buildings and azulejo-covered train stations offer a glimpse into local life. Here, you’ll board a Rabelo boat, once used to transport barrels of port wine down the river, and enjoy a peaceful cruise along the Douro’s calm waters, surrounded by steep vine-covered slopes and quiet beauty. Afterwards, you’ll continue on to your accommodation in the valley.

Day 4: Wine tasting and continue to Coimbra

Today, journey south toward the historic city of Coimbra. Along the way, you’ll stop at a local quinta, where vineyard-covered hills surround a family-run estate, steeped in heritage. Here, you will be treated to a wine tasting that showcases the valley’s distinct varietals, followed by a leisurely lunch crafted from regional ingredients and paired with the estate’s finest offerings.

Day 5: Coimbra and Fado music

Begin the day with a visit to the exquisite Joanine Library, housed within the historic University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in Europe. Admire its baroque interior and learn about centuries of scholarship.

In the evening, enjoy a live Fado performance – but unlike Lisbon’s Fado, Coimbra’s version is sung by students and professors, echoing with melancholy and nostalgia.

Day 6: Sintra and Lisbon

Travel south to Sintra, a lush hillside retreat where Portuguese royalty once built their summer homes. Explore the fantastic Pena Palace, a colourful, romantic-era masterpiece with sweeping views and ornate architecture.

Continue to Lisbon, Portugal’s sun-kissed capital, where old-world charm meets cosmopolitan flair.

Day 7: Explore Lisbon

Explore Lisbon on a guided walking tour that brings the city’s history to life. Stroll through elegant Baixa squares, wander the labyrinthine streets of Alfama and pass landmarks from Portugal’s Age of Discovery. In the evening, gather with your group one final time for a farewell dinner, sharing stories and toasting to the journey so far.

Day 8: Depart Lisbon

Your Portugal tour ends after breakfast.
