DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN TOKYO

Welcome to Japan! You will be met on arrival at Tokyo Haneda airport and transferred to your hotel.

In the evening, there will be a welcome dinner introducing Rowan Hooper from 91av, as well as your local guide.

DAY 2: MIRAIKAN MUSEUM OF EMERGING SCIENCE AND INNOVATION

In the morning, enjoy a city tour using public transport accompanied by an English-speaking guide. Visit Asakusa Sensoji Temple and stroll the Nakamise temple street. Continue to the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, simply known as the Miraikan, a museum created by Japan's Science and Technology Agency. Some of the highlights of the museum include real-time displays of data from a huge array of seismometres across Japan, which show that the country is gently vibrating. Also see Asimo – the Honda robot, which is one of the star attractions along with the model Maglev train. After time to explore the museum at leisure, head to the Dome Theatre to watch an immersive 30-minute 4D movie.

Firstly, visit the Meiji Shrine, dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji and a popular place for traditional Japanese weddings. Drive down Omotesando, a broad tree-lined shopping avenue that is home to some of the world’s top fashion brands. Continue to the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, which stands at 238 metres. Head up to the observation deck where, on a clear day, you can even see as far as Mount Fuji. The tower also houses the excellent Mori Art Museum. Enjoy the evening to explore Tokyo at your own leisure.

DAY 3: NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURE AND SCIENCE

Begin your day with a fascinating visit to the National Museum of Nature and Science, which is dedicated to the wonders of the natural world and technological advancements. Explore its extensive exhibits covering topics such as paleontology, space exploration, biodiversity and the evolution of life on Earth. Marvel at the impressive dinosaur fossils, interactive science displays, and innovative technology showcases. The museum also features a planetarium, where you can embark on a cosmic journey through the universe.

The remainder of the day is free for you to explore at leisure.

Your evening meal will be in a local sushi restaurant.

DAY 4: TOKYO TO HAKONE

Walk to Shinjuku Station and take the two-hour express train service to Hakone. This comfortable and scenic journey offers panoramic views of Japan’s countryside, including rolling hills, charming towns and glimpses of Mount Fuji on clear days. The spacious seating and large windows make for a relaxing ride as you leave behind the urban landscape and transition into the tranquil natural beauty of Hakone.

Owakudani is an active volcanic valley, where you can wander through an otherworldly landscape of steam vents, bubbling sulfuric pools and craggy terrain. As you walk along the well-marked paths, the air is thick with the distinct scent of sulfur, and you can observe the power of the Earth's natural forces at work. The volcanic activity creates dramatic steam jets that hiss from fissures in the ground, creating an eerie yet fascinating atmosphere.

Continue your journey via cable car heading towards Togendai, where you will board a pirate boat to Hakonekomachi. Both are ports on the shores of Lake Ashi, an enormous volcanic crater created by an eruption 3000 years ago.

A unique local tradition tied to this geothermal wonder is the famous black eggs (kuro-tamago) that are sold by vendors in the area. These eggs are boiled in the naturally heated waters of the volcanic hot springs, turning their shells a deep black due to the sulfur in the water. The eggs are said to have special health benefits, with locals and visitors alike believing that consuming one can add seven years to your life. As you enjoy this traditional snack, you can also soak in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains, Lake Ashi and the towering presence of Mount Fuji, making Owakudani a memorable stop on your journey.

From here, transfer to your traditional Japanese ryokan-style accommodation.

DAY 5: HAKONE TO KYOTO

In the morning, begin your journey with a ride on Japan’s iconic bullet train from Odawara Station, just a short distance from Hakone. As the train departs, the beautiful, mountainous scenery of Hakone slowly fades into the distance, and soon you’ll find yourself whisked away at speeds of up to 320 km/h, passing through countryside landscapes, rice fields and small towns as you make your way towards Kyoto. The journey takes around two to two and a half hours.

Upon arrival in Kyoto, head straight to the iconic Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see historical landmark. Built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Nijo Castle was originally constructed as the Kyoto residence for the shogun, showcasing both political power and architectural beauty. As you enter the castle, you’ll be transported back in time to the era of samurai and shoguns. The Ninomaru Palace, located within the castle grounds, is particularly famous for its nightingale floors, which make a chirping sound when walked upon, a clever security feature designed to alert residents of intruders. After exploring the castle's magnificent interior, step outside to discover the serene beauty of the Nijo Castle Gardens.

Finish the day with a visit to Nishiki Market. Known as "Kyoto’s Kitchen", Nishiki is a narrow shopping street lined with more than 100 shops, selling fresh seafood and vegetables, pickles, Japanese sweets and sushi.

DAY 6: KYOTO CITY TOUR

Today, enjoy a city tour exploring Kyoto, where your first stop will be the Tenryu-ji Temple located in the scenic district of Arashiyama. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a prime example of Zen Buddhist architecture and garden design, offering a peaceful sanctuary surrounded by stunning landscapes.

Continue to the Nonomiya Shrine, which leads through Arashiyama’s famous bamboo groves that are unlike any other place in Japan. This bamboo has been used to manufacture various products, such as baskets, cups, boxes and mats for centuries. Nonomiya Shrine is a Shinto shrine where, in ancient times, unmarried imperial princesses stayed for a year or more to purify themselves. The shrine is referenced in numerous works of literature, most notably in the world’s first novel, The Tale of Genji.

After lunch, travel to Kinkakuji, also known as the Golden Pavilion, which was originally built as a retirement villa for the shogun. After the death of Shogun Yoshimitsu, it became a Buddhist temple at his request, and is now one of Kyoto’s most famous temples, with its top two floors completely covered in gold leaf.

In the evening, enjoy a sumptuous Japanese dinner in the private room of a traditional restaurant with an hour of private maiko or geisha entertainment consisting of conversation and dancing accompanied by the shamisen (Japanese stringed instrument). You will also have a chance to ask questions about the geisha and their world.

DAY 7: KYOTO DAY AT LEISURE

After all that, you deserve a rest day to enjoy this wonderful city at your own pace. You can easily visit the Shinto Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine or Yasaka Pagoda, or travel to visit the Nara Deer Park, which is nearby.

DAY 8: KYOTO TO OKINAWA

You will be transferred to Osaka’s Kansai Airport for your flight to Naha, the capital of Okinawa prefecture, a tropical island located in Japan’s southernmost region. The flight typically takes around an hour and a half to two hours.

The Okinawa prefecture encompasses a group of islands located in the southernmost part of Japan, known for their beautiful clear blue waters, coral reefs, vibrant marine life, rich culture and unique history. The region has its own distinct culture, language (Okinawan or Uchinaguchi) and traditions, which differ from those of mainland Japan.

Upon arrival in Naha, transfer to Gyokusendo Cave, one of the island’s most fascinating natural wonders. As the longest cave in southern Okinawa, stretching over 5 kilometres, the cave is renowned for its stunning array of stalactites and stalagmites, some of which are centuries old, creating an awe-inspiring landscape of shimmering rock formations. Walk along well-maintained trails that allow you to experience the cave’s natural wonders up close, while informative displays along the way offer insights into the cave’s formation and its historical significance.

Afterwards you will be transferred to your hotel in Naha.

DAY 9: OKINAWA INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, BUSENA MARINE PARK AND HIGASHI-SON FUREAI HIRUGI PARK

In the morning, transfer to the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), located in the picturesque northern part of Okinawa Island. The drive to OIST will take you through some of the island's scenic landscapes, offering glimpses of lush greenery, coastal views and tranquil countryside as you head towards one of Japan’s leading research institutions. Upon arrival at OIST, you will be given a tour of its extension campus, which is home to cutting-edge research and innovation across a wide range of scientific disciplines. OIST is renowned for its focus on interdisciplinary studies, including fields such as molecular science, physics, environmental sustainability and engineering. The campus itself is a stunning example of modern architecture, blending seamlessly with the surrounding natural environment.

Continue to the Busena Marine Park to embark on your glass-bottom boat cruise, where you can witness tropical fish swimming among beautiful coral and an underwater observatory. The only facility of its kind in Okinawa, this tower offers a 360-degree, 5-metre-deep view of the sea. Learn about the marine parks coral replanting project. There will be free time for those who want to visit the underwater observatory for additional fee.

In the afternoon, visit the Higashi-son Fureai Hirugi Park, the gateway to the Yanbaru region in the northern part of the main island, where you will explore the rare ecosystems, unique wildlife and beautiful landscapes found in Yanbaru National Park. Journey through lush hirugi mangrove forests, a designated national monument that gives the park its name.

DAY 10: YANBARU NATIONAL PARK

Today, you will explore the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, Yanbaru National Park, a stunning natural region that spans much of the northernmost part of Okinawa. This pristine park covers 136 square kilometres, with nearly 80 per cent of its area blanketed by vibrant subtropical evergreen forests. Yanbaru is a haven for biodiversity, home to around 1250 plant and tree species, many of which are unique to Okinawa. The park is also a sanctuary for a variety of native wildlife, including the rare Yanbaru long-armed scarab beetle, Japan’s largest beetle species, and other endemic creatures that call this unique ecosystem home.

In the evening return to Naha for a farewell meal with the group.

DAY 11: DEPART NAHA

After breakfast, there will be a group transfer to the airport. Alternatively, we can arrange for you to stay on for a few more nights to enjoy Okinawa.
