Heatwaves are here to stay

IF YOU thought the heatwave in Paris that killed thousands last year was bad, brace yourself. Heatwaves in Europe and the US are poised to become more frequent, more intense and longer-lasting, according to a model that looks at the impact of climate change.

Gerald Meehl and Claudia Tebaldi from the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, looked at Paris and Chicago, which was hit by a severe heatwave in 1995.
