You probably know that doing a high-stress job can make you ill. But new
research shows that giving people control at work relieves the burden on health
services. Daniel Ganster of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville tracked
the stress levels and healthcare costs of 105 hospital nurses for five years.
Nurses with demanding jobs and little control remained stressed hours after work
and spent far more on healthcare than those with equally tough jobs but more
control (Journal of Applied Psychology, vol 86, p 954).
