Almost all genetically modified food sold in Australia and New Zealand will
have to be labelled from July 2001. The new labelling laws, which bring the
countries closer to the European Union’s position, won’t cover food sold in
restaurants, low levels of unintentional contamination, and highly refined foods
such as oils. A bid by Australian Prime Minister John Howard to exempt foods
containing less than 1 per cent GM material was rejected.
