THE first of a new generation of “immersive” Web-based films made its debut
at the Cannes Film Festival last week. The film lets viewers steer the camera as
they watch. The 4-minute production, The New Arrival, was filmed using
a panoramic lens to capture a 360° view of the action. Director Amy
Talkington says the technique leads to an entirely new type of storytelling,
since it requires 360° action and must provide cues to guide the viewers’
