BSE, dioxins in chickens, sewage in cattle feed…Europe seems to
stumble from one food scare to another. But now the European Commission plans to
create the European Food Authority, which will have its own research programme
and provide scientific advice. The authority won’t monitor and punish violations
of food safety laws, however. This will remain the job of national watchdogs
such as Britain’s new Food Standards Agency, which begins work in April.
