British university science has been awarded £320 million for new
equipment and buildings—the biggest investment in infrastructure for 40
years. Awards ranging from £750 000 to £30 million will go to 27
universities. The funds will cover telescope upgrades, a fleet of autonomous
underwater platforms for oceanographic research, and new labs for magnetic and
atmospheric research. This is the second of five rounds of payouts by the Joint
Infrastructure Fund, supported by the government and the Wellcome Trust.
