Europe’s Digital Video Broadcasting group is to let digital TV sets deliver
cinema-quality Dolby surround sound, with five stereo channels and an extra bass
channel. DVB tried to enforce a surround sound system based on MPEG-2, the
compression system used to deliver the video signal for digital TV, but
equipment makers showed no interest in developing it because Dolby has become
the sound standard for analogue TV. DVB’s decision follows similar moves by
Australia and Singapore. The first Dolby-capable digital TV sets launch next
month.
