The controversial British artist Damien Hirst, famous for works including a
bisected pregnant cow preserved in formaldehyde, is to be the first artist to
exhibit on Mars. Hirst has agreed to provide one of his abstract “spot
paintings” for the Beagle 2 lander, part of the European Space Agency’s Mars
Express mission due for launch in 2003. The painting will be used to calibrate
onboard cameras and spectrometers.
