The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, arguably the
most prestigious university in the US, has admitted that its School of Science
is biased against women. The admission follows a five-year analysis of salaries,
allocation of lab space and other resources, as well as interviews with the
women concerned. Women now make up 10 per cent of MIT’s science faculty,
compared with 8 per cent in 1994. But MIT president Charles Vest admits that
“much remains to be done”.
