Boeing should redesign the rudder control system in the 737, one of its most
popular jets, says the US National Transportation Safety Board. After a
four-year investigation into a USAir crash near Pittsburgh in September 1994,
the board says that the accident happened when the 737’s rudder swung
uncontrollably to the left. It believes the hydraulic fluid might have been
contaminated with particulates. “If there is a way to make the 737 safer, we
will take the necessary steps,” says Boeing.
