Britain is to relax its strict animal quarantine laws, designed to keep
rabies out of the country. From April next year, some cats and dogs will be
spared the usual six months’ detention. To qualify, a pet coming from European
Union countries must have been fitted with a microchip tag, had its blood tested
at an approved laboratory and been vaccinated against rabies. Animals from most
countries outside the EU will still face the slammer, however.
