Mars Express, the European Space Agency’s planned mission to the Red Planet,
received the go-ahead from all 14 national delegations last week. Due to be
launched in 2003, Mars Express will be the first orbiter to use radar to
penetrate the surface of Mars and map the distribution of possible underground
water deposits. It will also include a lander, Beagle 2, with a burrowing robot
to collect soil.
