NEC has developed software that can identify fingerprints on different
fingers of the same hand. Combined with a new scanner that’s smaller than a
matchbox, NEC says the software enables a different computer function to be
assigned to each finger. “The left index finger may be configured to open a
file, or a touch of the right thumb will jump to the user’s favourite web-site,”
says an NEC spokesman. NEC says this makes its system much more than a simple PC
access authorisation system. The program recognises fingerprints in less than a
second.
