After Darwin is the script of Timberlake Wertenbaker’s play (first produced
at London’s Hampstead Theatre this July). It is really two plays: one tells of
the clash between science and religion—Darwin versus the Beagle’s captain,
Fitzroy. The other deals with the actors and author of the play and its
director, living in a world fundamentally affected by Darwin’s ideas. Successful
on stage, it must have been more approachable there. A reading doesn’t do it
