Review : Jumping Jehoshaphat

31 January 1998

The Pronghorn is the Americas’ only antelope. Its phenomenal speed and many
of its behaviours seem ill-suited against today’s predators. In The American
Pronghorn, John Byers argues they are adaptations to predators extinct for 4
million years, including the North American lion and cheetah. Compelling and
paradigm-changing stuff which makes you wonder how many other animals retain
behaviours relating to predators or prey that no longer exist. A great piece of
paleobiological detective work. Published by University of Chicago Press,
£19.25/$23.95, ISBN 0226086992.
