The US Food and Drug Administration last month approved a cheaper way of
removing the womb lining of women who suffer excessively heavy periods. Doctors
insert a balloon in the womb and inflate it with water at 87 °C. The heat
destroys most of the womb lining. The company that developed the procedure,
Gynaecare of Menlo Park, California, says that it takes 30 minutes and patients
need no more than a local anaesthetic.
