From the New Year, all products sold in leading British supermarkets
containing soya or maize protein of US origin will carry labels warning that
they include genetically engineered ingredients. The decision to voluntarily
label the produce was announced jointly last week by the British Retail
Consortium, the Food and Drink Federation and the Institute of Grocery
Distribution. Their rationale is that American exporters make no attempt to
segregate genetically engineered from natural crops, so all consignments of
maize and soya are likely to contain some engineered material.
