Patents : Wet behind the ears

By Barry Fox

25 October 1997

A baseball cap that lets you keep a cool head in the sun (W0 97/27771) has been patented by German inventor, Michael Stein. The top of the cap has a network of tubes that carry water from a container strapped on the side. Water leaks from holes in the tubes, and is drawn across the surface by capillary action. On a sunny day the water evaporates, cooling the wearer’s head.
