After years of negotiations with China, meteorological equipment is being set
up in Tibet to monitor the Asian monsoon. From next April, 10 unmanned stations
will measure temperature, humidity, wind energy, moisture flow and other aspects
of the Himalayan weather. Meteorologists believe that the Tibetan plateau is a
major cause of the monsoon rains, but until now there has been no data from
Tibet itself. The Asian Monsoon Experiment is being organised by 10 countries in
the Asia-Pacific region.
