Apes going spare

26 July 1997

Surplus chimpanzees that were bred for research should be put up for adoption
by zoos and game reserves, according to a report from the US National Research
Council.

The National Institutes of Health now owns about 1000 chimps, bred for AIDS
research. Caring for them costs $7 million a year. The report says that
further breeding should be halted for at least five years.
