No huge surprises in this year’s short list for the Rhône-Poulenc
Prizes for Science Books, but a lot of biology. The six contenders for the
£10 000 are: Richard Dawkins’s Climbing Mount Improbable, George Johnson’s
Fire in the Mind, In the Blood by Steve Jones, The Origins of Virtue by Matt
Ridley, Dava Sobel’s Longitude and The Wisdom of Bones by Alan Walker and Pat
Shipman. Organised by COPUS (Committee on the Public Understanding of Science)
and the Science Museum, the winner will be announced on 19 June. Cast a vote for
