Tired of the World Wide Wait for pretty pictures of the Solar System from the
Internet? Try the CD-ROM Views of the Solar System from the National Science
Teachers Association in the US ($21.95 in US, Tel: 703 243 7100, ISBN 0
87355 145 1). It is crammed with hundreds of pictures, from Mercury to Pluto,
and stuffed with articles describing the planets, including reports on the
impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter, and on the possibility of life on
Mars. Aimed at science teachers and space enthusiasts, it uses Web browser
software, supplied on the CD for both Windows and Macintosh computers, and
includes a list of astronomical Web sites. It’s no speed demon on an old
computer with a double-speed CD-ROM drive, but it’s still much faster than
downloading graphics from the Web.
