Enough copies exist of Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time for there to
be a copy for every 750 men, women and children in the world, says Bantam Press.
That would mean 6.6 million books. Bantam couldn’t confirm this astonishing
figure (“half the staff are at a sales conference”), but for those who don’t
want to share a copy with 749 other readers, try an update with illustrations,
just in time for Christmas. The Illustrated A Brief History of Time (£20,
ISBN 0 593 04059 7) boasts more than 150 pictures, new chapters on wormholes and
time travel, and will, no doubt, hit the bestseller lists again.
