The Musical Temperament by Anthony E. Kemp (Oxford University Press,
£14.99, ISBN 0 19 852362 9) claims to be the first book to study the
fascinating personality differences between musicians. String players emerge as
especially introverted, snooty and highly strung—apparently the result of
years of lonely practice. By contrast, brass players appear extroverted,
practise in a more social environment and think of the strings as toffee-nosed
with assumed airs. Fun even for the tone deaf.
