Science is essentially a process of interaction between human beings and their surroundings. Starting with the problems of survival, the process has led to Einstein’s theories of space and time. James Perlman in his Science Without Limits (Prometheus Books, $29.95, ISBN 0 87975 962 3) gives us a guided tour to the splendid story of man’s constant curiosity and its achievements. The section on the strange world of 4-dimensional space-time is a marvellous job of explanation.
