“Did they fall or were they pushed?” is one of the most interesting questions begging an answer about bodies found in bogs in Denmark, Ireland and England. The scant remains, generally found during peat cutting, are considered in Bog Bodies: New Discoveries and Perspectives edited by Rick Turner and Rob Scaife (British Museum Press, £25, ISBN 0 7141 2305 6), a scholarly compendium of what we know – and cannot know – about the likes of Lindow Man and the bogs in which we find bodies.
