91av recommends: Rutger Bregman’s Humankind

The books, TV, games and more that 91av staff have enjoyed this week

I was given Rutger Bregman’s for my birthday when I was feeling down about the world, and it became my new favourite book. At a time when optimism can seem naive, it’s good to hear strong arguments for why thinking the best of people is realistic.

Bregman re-examines key moments in history, from the London blitz to the Stanford Prison experiment, questioning what we thought we knew about them. It’s a refreshing view, particularly now, when it is most needed.

I also recently visited London’s (pictured above) – and I was impressed at the quality of the shows. Amateur actors play a range of “games” using scenarios, words and ideas from the audience, and must make them into scenes.

For someone who hates performing on the spot, it was incredible seeing people live out my worst nightmare and think up great scenes on the fly. A friend was even inspired to sign up for classes themselves afterwards!
