How to be a maker: The complete list of all you need

Our 10-part maker series is a fun way to learn about electronics, working up to building a biscuit-ferrying robot. Here’s all the stuff you need

To make all the projects in our 10-week maker series, you’re going to need some supplies. They shouldn’t be expensive, and some you might have lying around already.

If you want to get ahead and collect everything you need, here’s a full list.

 

Household items

– Ìýbiscuits (essential)

(There’s a project involving a mini disco ball too, so you might want to have one of those handy.)

You’ll need the following for the different projects each week.

 

Week 2: Electric candle

Week 3: Toast notifier

Week 4: Desktop traffic light

Week 5: Propeller car

– a DC motor (with a voltage range you can use with your 9-volt battery; for example covers 1 to 18 volts)

 

Week 6: Magic eight ball

– a micro:bit board

You’ll be programming this with your computer, so it’s worth that comes with the USB cable you need, and a battery to power the device when it’s not attached to your computer

 

Week 7: Theremin

If you’ve collected the parts for the previous projects, you should have everything you need for this.

 

Week 8: Sound-sensitive disco ball

– 2 x continuous rotation servos (we’ll only need one for the disco ball, but we’ll need the second one for the next project. Best to get a matching pair. )

– a sound sensor (ones that say “” or similar are good)

– Optional: micro:bit edge connector (like , or )

 

Week 9: ÌýRubbish sweeper

– 2 x

– to holdÌý 4xAA batteries

– either a small robot chassis (we used ) or something lightweight you can attach wheels to and use instead – an old CD case, for example

 

Week 10: Biscuit bot

– 2 x line sensors (again, any that say “” should work)
