Set up because of fears that a cyber-attack could bring the nation to its knees, the commission this week released its recommendations. The report recalls the UK’s struggle during the second world war to decrypt Nazi communications, explaining the US is now in a similar situation “but not playing the role of the British”.
Government and company networks are being routinely subjected to attacks. Redesigning outdated infrastructure, reorganisation and a “cyber czar” are among the commission’s recommendations to try to prevent them.

It also calls for a “holistic” approach. So why not look to the ultimate in holism, nature itself? Earth relies on myriad ecosystems to cope with diverse threats, yet when it comes to software, protocols and operating systems the world is virtually a monoculture. Motley cyber environments would limit the fallout from a major attack. Let diversity flourish in the name of cybersecurity.
