Living in New Zealand, astronomer Richard Hall can see the Clouds of Magellan. These two “glowing clouds of light” are the closest galaxies to Earth. His well-written guide, How to Gaze at the Southern Stars (Awa Press, NZ$24.99), will beguile experienced star-spotters and absolute beginners alike. Hall has also been involved in building a Stonehenge for the southern hemisphere near Wellington. He tells the story in Stonehenge Aotearoa (Phoenix Astronomical Society, NZ$20).
