Rivers are too capricious for cities. They flood and stink. Many have been buried underground, in sewers, for our greater convenience. Now that city inhabitants are demanding their return, Urban Rivers: Our inheritance and future (IWA Publishing) should have been a chance to celebrate. Sadly, Geoff Petts and company make it read like a compendium of Environment Agency leaflets.
