Here’s how it works: Dixons’ stores are giving away a PC-only CD-ROM (they
are also discussing a Mac version with Apple) carrying a version of Internet
Explorer 4 that connects you to the “Freeserve” site at
http://www.freeserve.net. This gives you an e-mail address, 5 megabytes of webspace and
local rate phone access to the Net. The downside is that in return, you have to
answer personal profile questions on age, income and interests—which will
of course be used to target the said ads and sales offers.
