This month marks the 30th anniversary of the first European showing of
2001: A Space Odyssey, the movie that was based on Arthur C. Clarke’s
best-selling novel of the same name. The intelligence of the story and the
sophistication of the film, which told of a spacecraft’s encounter with an alien
intelligence, afforded a new respect for science fiction and a following that
