Joysticks could soon be replacing steering wheels in Daimler Benz cars if the
company acts on its GB 2 308 832 patent. To tell drivers what the wheels are
doing sensors monitor the wheel angle to generate a reaction force on the stick.
This varies with wheel angle and speed to mimic the feel of a steering wheel. If
the wheels are in a dangerous position, the reaction circuit makes the joystick
vibrate. As the risk rises, the stick vibrates more slowly and each “kick” is
more powerful.
