think. The shock of the new may have gone, but the appreciation of the depth of
the work has grown. Try Jane Goodall’s revised edition of In the Shadow of Man
(Phoenix Giant, £10.99, ISBN 1 85799 427 2), a beautiful account of how
the best science is done. Goodall transformed our ideas about chimpanzees and,
valuably, continues to communicate those ideas to the public.
