Hera, with CubeSats, will soon be heading to the Dimorphos asteroid
ESA/Science Office

The European Space Agency (ESA) is sending a mission to investigate what happened to an asteroid that NASA punched in 2022. The Hera mission, launching in October, will head to asteroid Dimorphos, which NASA hit with its Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission.

The goal of DART was to check whether smashing a spacecraft into an asteroid would be a good way to defend Earth should an asteroid ever be heading in our direction. We know that the impact around its parent asteroid, Didymos, shortening each orbit by about 33 minutes, but we don’t have details on how exactly that collision affected the asteroid or what happened afterwards.

“We need another spacecraft to go back to the crime scene in order to tell whether the impact left a crater or entirely reshaped the asteroid, because with the current data both scenarios are possible,” says Hera mission head at the Côte d’Azur Observatory in France. “Hera is a detective that is going to do a complete investigation of the impact.”

The mission consists of one main spacecraft, which will fly as close as 1 kilometre to Dimorphos, and two tiny cube-shaped satellites intended to land on its surface and check it out up close. That investigation will be crucial to simulations of potentially dangerous asteroids and how to deflect them in the future, but it will also provide key scientific insights.

“Collisions play a key role in all the solar system history – we started growing planets by collisions, all the solid surfaces are populated with craters from collisions,” says Michel. “If we are going to build a complete model of the collision history of the solar system, we need to understand how these collisions work.” Hera will help reveal how collisions work in space – and how to make those collisions work for us.

Get ready to see a total solar eclipse in 2024 – here’s how /article/2408616-get-ready-to-see-a-total-solar-eclipse-in-2024-heres-how/?utm_campaign=RSS|NSNS&utm_content=2024-news-preview&utm_medium=RSS&utm_source=NSNS Sun, 31 Dec 2023 15:00:19 +0000 /?post_type=article&p=2408616

On 8 April 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible in North America from a strip of land that begins in Mexico and ends in Canada, passing through 13 US states. Although the eclipse can be seen in lots of places, knowing exactly where to look from is key to get the full experience. The part of Earth’s surface from which a total eclipse is visible is called the path of totality, and it will only be 185 kilometres wide. Viewers elsewhere in North America will see a partial solar eclipse. You can check to make sure. Solar eclipses happen when Earth, the moon and the sun line up so that the moon blocks the light from the sun. It is just large enough to create a total eclipse when the alignment is spot on. The moon orbits Earth every month, but its orbit is angled at just over 5 degrees compared with Earth’s around the sun. This means that the three don’t line up perfectly that often. All solar eclipses start out as partial, with only part of the sun being blocked. But total eclipses have a special middle section, called totality, in which the moon blocks all the sun’s light. Never look at the sun directly during a partial eclipse. To watch, you can use eclipse glasses, but not ordinary sunglasses. You can also use solar filters designed for this purpose for binoculars or telescopes, or you can make an eclipse viewer using a pinhole camera that projects the eclipse so you view the event indirectly. A colander or anything with small holes in can be used like this too.
The partial eclipse will last just under 3 hours. For those lucky enough to find themselves in the path of totality, the 2024 event will be a special one. Because the moon’s orbit brings it closer to and further from Earth at various times, some eclipses have totality that lasts longer than others. This time, totality will last over 4 minutes. Totality is the only time you can look at the sun directly, without any solar filters. A total solar eclipse is an incredible experience. The temperature suddenly drops, it gets dark and you can see stars and planets during the day. There are all sorts of phenomena to watch out for before and after totality, too, like strange shadows and so-called – bright flashes of light caused as the sun’s rays pass along the uneven surface of the moon. ]]>

NASA’s Europa Clipper mission is due to launch in October 2024 and head towards Jupiter’s moon Europa, where it will hunt for signs that this icy satellite could be suitable for life.

The spacecraft won’t orbit Europa when it arrives in 2030 – instead, it will loop around Jupiter in a way that will allow it to repeatedly zoom past the moon at distances as close as 25 kilometres from its surface.

“We’re going to get this really comprehensive assessment of what Europa is like,” says at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

Of the moon’s many mysteries, perhaps the most important is the structure of its internal ocean and whether it could be habitable. While Clipper won’t be able to look for life itself, it will set the stage for future missions that could.
